8 Strange, Gross & Horrible Things Discovered in Portable Toilets

Anyone who works in the portable loo hire industry knows that you never know what you might find in the toilet, including things that are very strange, very gross and, sometimes, downright horrible. The list below includes some of the most unusual things ever discovered in portable toilets. Be prepared, some of them are disturbing.

1. Animals – Many portable loo service employees have found animals in loos that either were placed in there by pranksters or got in on their own. The animals can include squirrels and turtles, as well as spiders and insects.

2. Bodily Fluids – Of course, portable cabins are intended to collect bodily fluids like urine in the tanks. However, it doesn’t always end up in the tank, and it’s not the only bodily fluid that gets left behind. Urine, feces, vomit and blood sometimes end up on the walls and floor.

3. Sex Toys – Porta-loos aren’t only used by people to relieve themselves. Sex toys left behind are proof of that.

4. Bombs – There have been instances where bombs were left in portable toilets. One story that made the news was in 2013 in Washington state, USA where a sanitation worker discovered a pipe bomb in a toilet, which caused 50 people in the area to be evacuated. Luckily, the device was safely destroyed.

5. Drugs – Portable cabins are common places for people to use drugs. As a result, workers cleaning the cabins sometimes discover residue, needles and other drug paraphernalia.

6. Newborns – It seems too strange and horrible to be true, but there have been newborns left in portable toilets. In 2009, a woman in Maryland, USA gave birth in a porta-loo and left the newborn inside, even warning a passerby not to use the toilet and explaining what she had done. The man called the authorities while the woman retrieved the unresponsive baby from the toilet. The baby did survive and was assigned to social services, while the woman, who told police she didn’t know she was pregnant, was charged with child abuse and reckless endangerment.

7. Fetuses – Another disturbing incident took place in June 2008 in Colorado, USA, where a sanitation worker pumping a portable toilet discovered a discarded third-trimester fetus in the toilet.

8. Dead Bodies – It’s actually not terribly uncommon for dead bodies to be found in portable loos. People have died in the toilets as a result of medical issues, drug overdoses and even murders.
